Your opinion: The perfect farm
What do you think about the ideas in the video? Write at least 5 lines about it. Here are some points to help you remember:
- Farming enabled civilisation
- The farming methods of the past cannot be used for the future.
- Smart machines will help farms use less inputs and produce more outputs.
- Farming used to hurt ecosystems, but it can help them if we do farming differently.
- We can use land better by reducing food waste and eating plant-based diets.
The Agricultural Environment
Glossary
- climate the average conditions of the atmosphere over at least 30 years
- weather the daily changes in the atmosphere
- drought a long period of unusually low rainfall
- greenhouse effect the warming of the atmosphere due to gases that trap heat from the sun
- precipitation water coming to the ground from clouds, e.g. rain, hail, snow
Climate factors that influence agriculture
- Solar irradiation: the amount of energy that reaches the ground
- Temperature: different plants and animals grow best in different temperature conditions
- Precipitation: the amount of available water affects what can be grown
- Evaporation: reduces the amount of water available
- Wind: affects temperature, precipitation and evaporation. It can also disperse pollen, damage plants, dry out plants, and kill young animals
- Humidity: affects the ability of stock to cool down by evaporation
Farmers can modify these factors using techniques such as
- Windbreaks
- Stock shelters
- Irrigation
- Placing plastic film on the ground around plants
- Glasshouses
