Your opinion: The perfect farm

What do you think about the ideas in the video? Write at least 5 lines about it. Here are some points to help you remember:
  • Farming enabled civilisation
  • The farming methods of the past cannot be used for the future.
  • Smart machines will help farms use less inputs and produce more outputs.
  • Farming used to hurt ecosystems, but it can help them if we do farming differently.
  • We can use land better by reducing food waste and eating plant-based diets.

The Agricultural Environment

Glossary

  • climate the average conditions of the atmosphere over at least 30 years
  • weather the daily changes in the atmosphere
  • drought a long period of unusually low rainfall
  • greenhouse effect the warming of the atmosphere due to gases that trap heat from the sun
  • precipitation water coming to the ground from clouds, e.g. rain, hail, snow

Climate factors that influence agriculture

  • Solar irradiation: the amount of energy that reaches the ground
  • Temperature: different plants and animals grow best in different temperature conditions
  • Precipitation: the amount of available water affects what can be grown
  • Evaporation: reduces the amount of water available
  • Wind: affects temperature, precipitation and evaporation. It can also disperse pollen, damage plants, dry out plants, and kill young animals
  • Humidity: affects the ability of stock to cool down by evaporation
Farmers can modify these factors using techniques such as
  • Windbreaks
  • Stock shelters
  • Irrigation
  • Placing plastic film on the ground around plants
  • Glasshouses
